Last month, Pastor Andrei Ziablitsev wrote that his church in Kommunar, which is a suburb of St. Petersburg, was celebrating its 14th anniversary.

Heather and Rick Ives were in Russia 14 years ago as full time missionaries for RRR in the St. Petersburg area. At that time, Kommunar was a dark, bleak, dirty place in virtual economic ruin following the fall of communism just two years prior. Rick recently completed training a young man named Sergel Morozov to be a pastor, and he was starting a brand new church in his home town of Kommunar.

They rented the culture palace in Kommunar and invited folks from the community to come watch the film of Joni Eareckson Tada's life. Just about every unbeliever in that room gave their heart to Jesus that night. Now 14 years later, the church that started that evening is still serving the lost and the saved in Kommunar.

Russia is a much changed place today. When the Iron Curtain fell in 1989 and the Cold War between the US and Russia officially ended in 1991, the doors of religious freedom flew open. Many sensed almost immediately that those wide-open doors were temporary. We thank the Lord that these doors have stayed open for so long and that we and others have been able to do so much for the Lord in Russia. But the doors are closing today - quickly - right in front of our eyes.

You know that Russia recently had a presidential election, and the man handpicked by former Russian President, Vladimyr Putin, won in an absolute landslide. Although the new President, Dmitry Medvedev, is the official head of state, most believe that Mr. Putin continues to be the main powerbroker in Russia and that the new president is merely his legal face to the world. Mr. Putin, who is a very popular figure in Russia, has done many things that have alarmed he West in what appears to be a steady march away from freedom and democracy. So far, we are still able to work in Russia, but slowly and surely it is becoming increasingly difficult.

Russians Visiting US

Each year, RRR invites key leaders from Russia to come to the US to promote the ministry and thank as many of you as they can for supporting the mission and vision of planting churches in and around the cultural capital of Russia, St. Petersburg.

This year's visit will take place from May 1 - 20, and these leaders will be visiting and ministering in churches in Virginia, Texas and Ohio.

Pastor Ura Troyonov and his family will be focusing much of their time in Virginia before traveling to Texas, while Denis Kozlov, Vladimar and Elena Osipov will situate themselves in the great state of Ohio.

RRR asks that you pray for a fruitful time of ministry as our Russian friends update and inspire each congregation they visit.
